Arkansas Democratic Party Chairman Bill Gwatney has been shot, taken to the hospital in critical condition. Update: He has since died as a result of his injuries.
Authorities say the suspect in the shooting opened fire on police and was gunned down himself.
At this point, they have no motive in mind.
Previous below, including the question I’m still wondering about.
AP’s been a bit slow on updating the story, but MSNBC’s been keeping it moving pretty briskly.
Here’s to hoping Mr. Gwatney makes a full and speedy recovery.
The question I’m asking myself: which is the more reasonable default presumption, that the motivation was politically related, or not politically related? What do you think?

Not.
Trying to draw rationality from what are essentially irrational acts is a waste of time. But if you have an ax to grind, it makes for wonderful conversation piece.
I had a feeling someone would feel as you do, Rich.
The followup question: obviously, the press has to thoroughly look into the motivation of the shooter, to do an adequate job covering the story. Does asking if it was politically motivated and including the answer in a story create a false impression it might have been?
I’m pondering how a press outlet can do a thorough job covering the story and answering the questions everyone has without inappropriately applying a tint to the story. Thoughts?

Speculation is not a good idea in this circumstance. Like many others, I would like to know why. It is my understanding there is no connection between the two.
