Sometimes you can’t just give it away
Jack Lail notes that the “junior level” NBC affiliate staffer who posted the news of Tim Russert’s death to Wikipedia before NBC had reported it has been fired.
Jack says of the firing:
It was fine for NBC to hold the information until the family was notified, but it’s ludicrous to be flabbergasted by being beaten on [...]

Couching Knoxville, Hidden Nickname
So Jack Lail, Michael Silence and I are all in agreement: Knoxville ex-pat and writer Alison Glock’s claim in her NYT piece today that people regularly refer to Knoxville as “the couch” is kind of out in left field.
But maybe we three are just out of the loop on this one. So take the [...]
Wacky Internet fads that will NEVER catch on
Jack Lail points to the list:
Email has no place at work (1994)
It’s clearly used for goofing off. The last thing I want are my employees wasting my money emailing each other. What’s the use case for email at work? What’s the ROI? Who else is doing it?
Internet access has no place at work (1996)
Giving employees [...]
Cue the theme from “Deliverance”
Jack Lail made me laugh out loud with his response to some assumptions about modern Appalachia:
Charles Warner, who teaches at The New School in New York, and is the Goldenson Chair Emeritus at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, has an explanation at his Media Curmudgeon blog of Hillary Clinton’s wins in West Virginia [...]
Twittering about blogging about commuting
Jack Lail is using Twitter to find out which bloggers are talking about Smartfix today.

“Aggregation without aggravation”
Congrats to Knoxville bloggers Jack Lail and Cathy McCaughan on being added to this new site, Alltop.
Alltop describes itself as offering “aggregation without aggravation” for folks who may not use RSS feeds or customized homepages - sort of like a newsrack full of blogs.
It’s similar to what the folks at Knox’d are doing here locally.

Read More..>>Volunteer Voters redirect
Well, it looks like WKRN in Nashville has now switched the name domain so that when you type in the URL for now-defunct Volunteer Voters, you are taken to the mostly defunct (or at least a shadow of what it was under Britney Gilbert’s guidance) Nashville Is Talking.
I am really looking forward to seeing A.C. [...]
Conversing about Web journalism
Join “A Public Conversation On Web Journalism” at UT this week. I’m one of the panelists, along with all kinds of other interesting folks I’m looking forward to seeing/meeting.

Knoxville Talks traffic
Wow. We’ve had a great first few months. Since launching my little project with scant fanfare during Christmas week (’07), we’ve racked up 72,797 page views.
I’m pretty happy with that.
Soon, you’ll start seeing more promotion for Knoxville Talks at WBIR.com and on the air at WBIR-TV. Lots of good stuff coming down the pike for [...]
Bloggers respond to WKRN’s decision to pull the rug out from under Volunteer Voters
As I noted last night, WKRN in Nashville has apparently decided to let the best political blogger in Tennessee go for budgetary reasons. Now, the state’s bloggers are responding.
Jack Lail
It was very sad to hear of layoff of A.C. Kleinheider, the writer of VolunteerVoters, today by Nashville TV station WKRN.
The media business is a tough [...]
If you give a man a pig…
Jack Lail is blogging about his personal experience with the much-discussed Kiva program, which allows people to make microloans to the working poor around the world:
On Dec. 23, 2006, I deposited $82.50 with Kiva. Of that, $7.50 was a tax-deductible charitable donation to Kiva and the other $75 went to Jovcho Bakalov, a Bulgarian, who [...]

The Knoxville blogosphere hits its stride
As home to the most famous blog on the planet, Knoxville can arguably lay claim to being the biggest little blogging city in the United States. In fact we’ve had a thriving online community ever since Al Gore first invented the internet, but our online conversation has really matured lately.
I myself have been blogging [...]
How can I get an invite next time?

Jack Lail helps me with my Twitter impairment
I’ve mentioned before that I still don’t quite get Twitter, but this does seem like pretty neat-o explanation.
Twitter can be a great way for journalists to connect with their readers. This, of course, also helps journalists: “One day, when I was researching an article, I was looking for a specific piece of information”, says Thomas [...]

Romancing the youth vote
Jack Lail introduces us to MTV’s Tennessee-based citizen reporter, Dustin Ogdin.
Ogdin describes the project:
You asked what I hope to accomplish with the MTV Street team. My goal is to cover the issues that matter to young Tennesseans, especially young people of voting age. I am particularly interested in covering those issues that are [...]
Twittering against breast cancer
